Information about Blood Thinners and Massage/Cupping

Important Information and Considerations for Clients regarding Blood Thinner Medications and massage with cupping techniques (Static or Dynamic)

Blood Thinners and Massage/Cupping

1. Massage Considerations:

   - Increased Risk of Bruising or Bleeding while on anticoagulants or blood-thinning medications either prescribed by a physician or over the counter (e.g., Aspirin) may be more prone to bruising or internal bleeding during a massage.

   - Light pressure and avoiding deep tissue techniques are advised.

  - It is essential for clients to be forthcoming about their medications before starting a massage treatment, so their Licensed Massage Therapist can safely customize the massage to meet their specific needs.

2. Cupping Therapy Considerations:

   - Cupping is generally not recommended for patients taking blood-thinning medication due to the increased risk of bruising and potential bleeding.

   - Cupping can cause minor blood vessels near the skin to burst, leading to bruising. This could be problematic for those on blood thinners.

   - Although the risk of cupping causing blood clots is low, the therapy’s potential to increase localized blood flow and cause bruising may pose a concern for individuals predisposed to clotting disorders.

   - Those with heart disease, clotting disorders, or on blood thinners should avoid cupping due to the risk of bleeding.

3. Consultation and Professional Guidance:

  - Cupping should be performed by trained and licensed practitioners.

 - Before trying cupping, particularly if taking blood thinners, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider.

This summary highlights the importance of understanding the risks associated with blood thinners and cupping therapy and emphasizes the need for careful consideration and professional guidance. By scheduling a massage appointment that includes dynamic cupping techniques or agrees to the application of dynamic cupping during a massage session, you are acknowledging that you understand and accept the potential risks associated with Cupping Techniques and Blood Thinning medications, either prescribed by a physician or over the counter (e.g., Aspirin).
